Explore town and nature in Brattleboro, Vt.
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - A thriving, artsy town along the banks of the Connecticut River, Brattleboro is bucolic enough for city-weary visitors while offering plenty of activities for energetic travelers. Three- and four-story historic buildings offer interesting and independently owned places to shop and dine, including at least five bookstores and almost as many coffee shops. In fact, there seems to be more than one of everything here: CD and used record stores, clothing boutiques, sporting goods emporiums, kitchen shops, home goods and gifts stores, restaurants, and arts and crafts galleries galore. Nearby, nature enthusiasts can hike, bike, kayak, and canoe. Though you could easily bring the kids, Brattleboro is ideal for a couple’s weekend getaway.

Chamber Publishes Second Book by Local Author
First presentation to the public at a reading and PowerPoint viewing at the Brooks Memorial Library, Thursday, September 10, at 7:00 pm.
In 2006, to celebrate its 100th anniversary, the Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerce collaborated with local author and historian, Wayne Carhart, to publish his series of essays on what makes Brattleboro the community it is. Brattleboro: Pages in Time became a favorite source of legend and lore for resident and visitor alike. It has also made its way to libraries around the country and into the homes and hands of many who have requested Chamber relocation packets. Indeed, the book is a great literary ambassador for our fair community.
Now, Mr. Carhart has teamed up with Charles Fish on another venture: On the Job: The Brattleboro Public Works Department, an unusual look at the people and processes that make Brattleboro work.
With generous text and over 100 full-color photographs, On the Job tells the story of the people who make it possible for the people of Brattleboro to drink from the tap, flush the toilet, and enjoy clean and lighted streets and sidewalks.
In documenting the often unnoticed work of the department, the authors spent two years at job sites, asking questions and listening.
On the Job is published by the Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerce and funded by the Thomas Thompson Trust and the Windham Foundation.
Wayne Carhart is a retired health administrator from Manhattan and a former President of the Brattleboro Historical Society. Charles Fish, is a Vermont native and a retired college professor. His most recent book is In the Land of the Wild Onion: Travels Along Vermont’s Winooski River.
The authors have volunteered their services, and the proceeds from sales will go to a special fund to benefit the department.
Contact the Chamber for information about purchasing. The book sells for $15 (US)
